Pro-Palestine encampments emerge at local universities

This video covered the student demonstrations occurring at local universities in the Bay Area and posed significant challenges concerning the ethics of the video. As the Israel-Palestine conflict is a highly sensitive conflict, I strove to be as unbiased as possible. I had to interview a multitude of students until I was able to incorporate the different perspectives from the two sides of the conflict. With Stanford being a private campus, I had limited time to film the encampments, fearing repercussions from a campus that had publicly denounced the protests. I learned that featuring opposing points of view in a hostile environment was a difficult task that I had to tread cautiously around.

Local soccer team creates opportunities for kids with special needs

While creating my first video that wasn't focused purely on the sports aspect of the game, I envisioned a video that would showcase the impact that this soccer team had on both the kids on the team and the parents. With the soccer practice I was filming being only an hour long, it presented the challenge of filming enough b-roll while still allowing enough time to obtain in-depth interviews and a feature photo. From this event, I learned about the importance of time management on the job, and gained a greater sense of appreciation for those who serve our communities.

The Spirit of Homecoming

This video captured a few of the many events that occurred during homecoming week and the spirit that it brought to our school's community. Contrary to the troubles of many other videos, the biggest challenge I faced while producing this video was selecting clips that could best portray the extent to which events such as homecoming bring our school together. Facing the enormous task of covering a huge topic allowed me to improve my skills of reporting on the most important topics.

Life behind a Duke Commit

I produced this story about one of the biggest sports stars that's ever passed through our school - Kaylee Kim. Kim's video was part of a feature package about qualities that are common among the greatest athletes at our school. Shooting Kim's video was extraordinarily different from the broadcast videos I've made in the past. To showcase her skills to the best of my abilities, I had to get creative with shot angles and equipment use and research different ways of filming the sport of soccer. On top of that, I struggled to obtain an ample amount of b-roll because the first training that I attended was located in a place with bad lighting. Faced with the decision of keeping the shots so I could extend the video or cutting my video short, I ultimately decided to only use clips that would be visually appealing to the audience to obtain a more professional look.

Families trick-or-treat down Laurel Street at the Goblin Walk

I produced this video about an annual Halloween event in my local community, which brought families together with the police department, fire department, and participating restaurants. While filming b-roll was a challenge, the most significant skill that I developed from this project was communicating with the police department to locate an interview with a media-trained officer.
